The legend lives on!

The legend of JOHN BARLEYCORN lives on at MAD RIVER BREWING COMPANY in Humboldt County California. The small brewery is widely known for their award winning STEELHEAD and JAMAICA brand ales. In addition to their five year round brews MAD RIVER BREWING also creates a seasonal Barleywine to pay homage to the Olde English legend of John Barleycorn and to celebrate the harvest season in Humboldt county.

According to brew master Bob Smith, “John Barleycorn is a persona embodying the living spirit of the grain expressed from its beginning as a seed, through growth and harvest, then continuing with the merriment as the spirit fills those who enjoy the ale he has become.” Mad River Brewing Co. revives the spirit of John Barleycorn once each year with this award winning strong ale. This will be the twelfth release of this unique brew. Each years release sports a different label in a series which tells the tale in verse and folksy, woodcut art. The recipe changes each year and reflects the tradition and art of the brew master at its finest. John Barleycorn is brewed in small 17-barrel batches using the finest ingredients available. Our 2002 brew uses certified Organic malts along with three varieties of whole hop flowers. This high gravity crowd pleaser has a rich dark amber coloring, a 93ibu and an abv of 9.0.

The limited production of this masterful brew always goes fast. Look for this years release around Halloween in six packs at your favorite retailer.
